 Theresa Serber Malcolm!

Have you ever heard this name before?  No?  The name is closely related to the International Women's Day we are celebrating today.  How do we tell ...

Congregation, it is important to know what is the reason behind celebrating a day, what is its history, who laid the foundation.  If you have this information, the joy of celebrating that day is doubled.  Let's take the example of today's International Women's Day. Everyone knows that today is Women's Day, but no one knows that it was started by Theresa Serber Malcolm.  Unfortunately Theresa is forgotten today.  Let's get acquainted (gain, obtain) with present and future tenses.

Theresa was born on May 1, 1874, to a Jewish family in Bar, Russia.  Growing up in an anti-Semitic environment, Theresa and her family suffered greatly under the Tsarist regime in Russia.  As a result, many families moved to the United States.  It also included Theresa's family.  Upon her arrival in the United States in 1891, Theresa, like many other Jews, worked for a living.  First he got a job in a bakery, then in a garment factory.  As her original nature was militant and rebellious, her attention was drawn to the issues of working women.  Theresa wasn't just a woman who kept quiet about questions… she began to think about what could be done to solve them, and from that she formed the Women's Union.  From this women's organization, she started working to raise the voice of migrant women workers.

He soon realized that he would not run the organization alone.  He recognized that if women wanted equal rights with men, they would have no choice but to enter politics.  Now she focuses on the issues of working women as well as gender equality as a whole.  He joined the Socialist Party and got involved in politics.  At that time, the Socialist Party was the only party to which women had access.  His motto was that we do not discriminate between men and women.  This is why Theresa was attracted to the Socialist Party.  But unfortunately they soon realized the truth that the party's slogan was just a show.  Women had a negligible place in the decision-making process.  Undeterred, Theresa decided that her goal was to pursue her own parallel ideology without leaving the party.  She started a separate movement of socialist women and strongly advocated that there should be a separate independent platform for women in politics.

The Socialist Party finally agreed, and for the first time in American history, a separate department for women was created.  Theresa became its president.  Congregation, it was not easy at that time!  On the one hand, women, including migrant workers from outside the United States, were the beginning of a new era!

In office, Theresa fought for women's rights.  One of those rights is the right of women to vote!  Until then, women in the United States did not have the right to vote.  Theresa raised the issue of getting it and got a lot of support for it.  Along with this, he successfully handled many women's issues.  Created awareness about education among women.

Theresa came up with an idea to draw the world's attention to women's issues.  The idea that one day of the year should be celebrated as Women's Day was supported by the Socialist Party and the first National Women's Day was celebrated in the United States on February 28, 1909.  The idea later spread to European countries and later became popular around the world.  Theresa Serber Malcolm is the main reason behind the unanimous celebration of International Women's Day on March 8, the same day all over the world.

Theresa Malcol died on November 17, 1949.  It was an astonishing journey from an immigrant girl to a powerful woman in American politics.  After his death, people gradually forgot about him.  Today we celebrate Women's Day but it is an unfortunate fact that Theresa is not mentioned anywhere.

Happy International Women's Day and greetings to Theresa Malcolm!
